How it uses iPhone Duo

According to the release notes for version 1.3.5 (October 10, 2026), Voca is "made for iPhone Duo". Folded, it fits the 5.4-inch outer display; when you open the phone it spreads out across the inner display, with the player on one side and the chapters or companion documents on the other. It also works half folded, propped up like a laptop. We have not yet tested Voca Player on a device.

What’s New

Version 1.3.8 · October 24, 2026

Widgets: Voca on your Home Screen and Lock Screen, in small, medium and large, with play, pause and skip, and your Continue Listening on the large one. On iOS 18 there's also a Play or Pause control for Control Center and the Action button. Captions: turn them on in the player to see the narration as it's read, scrolling in place of the cover like lyrics. They're made on your device as the book plays, so nothing leaves it, though unusual names may be spelled the way they sound. Needs iOS 27 or later on a device that supports on-device transcription. A finished book now plays again from the beginning when you press Play or choose it again. Tall cover art no longer pushes the player's controls off the screen.

About this app

Voca Player, from LV-223 Pty Ltd, is an audiobook player for people who keep their books on their own media server. It connects to local files, a Plex Media Server or an Audiobookshelf instance and streams straight from it, with no third-party cloud and no subscription. Companion files stored next to the audio, such as maps, liner notes, author commentary or the full text of a book as a PDF or EPUB, show up alongside the audiobook automatically. Playback is gapless across multi-file books, speed runs from 0.5× to 3×, and the sleep timer fades the volume out at 15 or 30 minutes, an hour, the end of a chapter and more. Lock Screen, Control Centre and Bluetooth headphone controls are supported, and double-tapping the cover jumps between chapters. Large libraries are browsed in a searchable grid with an A–Z jump bar, and series show how far through them you are. The app is free to use. A one-time in-app purchase unlocks unlimited offline downloads, including transferring books to Apple Watch. The developer states that your data stays between your device and your own server.
